From Away Day to Everyday: Creating Lasting Behavioural Change

A successful team development workshop can create energy, spark meaningful conversations and strengthen relationships. But what happens when everyone returns to work the next day?

For many organisations, that’s where the real challenge begins.

The true value of Team Development isn’t measured by what happens during the workshop itself. It’s measured by what happens afterwards. Are people communicating differently? Are they collaborating more effectively? Are teams holding themselves accountable and working together more successfully under pressure?

At Orangeworks, we believe lasting impact comes from helping teams turn learning into everyday behaviours.

Why Great Teams Need More Than a Great Day Out

Many teams know what good teamwork looks like. They understand the importance of communication, trust, collaboration and accountability.

The challenge is consistently demonstrating those behaviours in busy workplaces where priorities compete, pressure increases and old habits can quickly return.

That’s why effective Team Development needs to go beyond simply creating a positive experience. It needs to create self-awareness, shared understanding and practical actions that teams can apply long after the workshop ends.

Learning Through Experience

Experiential learning remains one of the most powerful ways to develop teams because it allows people to experience workplace behaviours in action.

In a recent bespoke Team Development programme, participants explored communication, teamwork and performance through a series of carefully selected Orangeworks experiences.

The day began with Connects, creating opportunities for meaningful conversations and helping team members build stronger relationships from the outset.

Participants then took part in Integrity, an engaging challenge that explores trust, accountability and decision-making under pressure. As teams navigate the activity, they quickly discover how individual actions impact collective outcomes and why honesty, communication and trust are essential for success.

Later in the day, teams tackled iBuild, a collaborative challenge that mirrors many of the realities of the workplace. Success depends on effective communication, planning, problem-solving and alignment around shared goals. Participants experience first-hand how assumptions, unclear communication and competing priorities can influence team performance.

While the activities themselves are engaging, the most valuable learning often happens during the facilitated debriefs. This is where participants reflect on their experiences, identify behavioural patterns and connect the learning back to real workplace situations.

Creating a Shared Language for Performance

Sustainable behavioural change becomes much easier when teams develop a common language around communication, performance and behaviour.

This is where frameworks such as The Everything DiSC Model, the SCARF Model and Red2Blue add significant value.

The Everything DiSC model helps individuals understand their behavioural preferences, communication styles and workplace strengths. By increasing self-awareness and understanding of others, teams can improve communication, reduce misunderstandings and strengthen working relationships.

The SCARF Model helps teams understand the social factors that influence behaviour at work. By exploring Status, Certainty, Autonomy, Relatedness and Fairness, individuals gain greater awareness of what creates psychological safety, trust and engagement within teams.

Red2Blue provides a practical framework for recognising reactive behaviours and shifting towards more intentional, collaborative and performance-focused actions. It helps individuals and teams understand how they respond under pressure and provides practical tools for performing at their best when it matters most.

Together, these frameworks create a shared language that teams can use every day, helping to reinforce positive behaviours and support long-term performance improvement.

Making Learning Stick

One of the biggest misconceptions about Team Development is that success is measured by how much people enjoyed the workshop.

While engagement is important, lasting impact comes from behavioural change.

That’s why Orangeworks works with organisations to identify desired outcomes and measure progress beyond the workshop itself. Through facilitated reflection, action planning and tools such as our Team Assessment process, teams can identify specific behaviours they want to strengthen and track how those behaviours are showing up in the workplace.

The goal is not simply to create a memorable experience.

The goal is to create meaningful change.

When teams communicate openly, listen actively, embrace different perspectives and hold themselves accountable, those behaviours become habits. Over time, those habits become culture.

That’s when Team Development moves beyond a single event and becomes part of how a team works every day.
