WeBuild Challenge
This project is designed to promote skills in effective team working. It is split into five project phases, as shown on the time plan; you will find a copy elsewhere in your briefing notes.

Roles
There are a number of roles in the exercise:
The Designers
Who will come up with a prototype design. Instruct the Engineers on how to implement your specification
The Engineers
Who will build the design.
The Clients
Your clients have commissioned this work and they will be evaluating your performance. They will be using scoring criteria to assess the team. They can award and deduct points based on their experience of working with you and for any non compliance with the rules.
Observers (optional)
Who are to observe to support in a post-competition continuous improvement review and ensure that the competition rules aren’t broken.
Rules
You are responsible for keeping time; it plays a major role in achieving the aim of your team. A master clock held by the Clients will be the basis for all time calculations. There will be particularly severe penalties for any overrun. Therefore, there is a potential total of 50 points before deduction of penalties for time overruns and infringement of the rules. There are also discretionary points available based on your client’s overall experience.
Other rules that you must observe are listed elsewhere in your instructions.
Background Information
You have been entered into a prestigious industry recognised competition and face rival teams from your competitors. Each team is tasked with designing and building:
“an innovative, sturdy vehicle capable of transporting one person in comfort and most importantly in safety over a distance of 50 metres”
Project Organisation
The project teams will be divided into:
- Designers who plan and produce a design
- Engineers who build a prototype to the designers’ specification
Selection of the Winning Team
The winning team will be selected by the Clients, on the basis of points awarded for:
- The quality of a five minute presentation given by the Designers in Phase 3 including:
- A description of the vehicle
- The benefits of the design
- A narrative of the design process (10 points)
- The degree of fit between what the Engineers produce and what the Designers presented to the customer (10 points)
- Three quality criteria for the vehicle itself:
- Sturdiness (10 points)
- Innovation/creativity (10 points)
- Safety and maneuverability (10 points)
Therefore, there is a potential total of 50 points before deduction of penalties for time overruns and infringement of the rules.There are also discretionary points available based on your client’s overall experience.
Logistics
You will be provided with materials from which the vehicle must be built.
